Chicago is a city built for walking, at least when compared to the majority of large cities in the United States. Many of the city’s neighborhoods offer convenient access to shops, restaurants, parks, and public transit. Allowing these walkable neighborhoods to flourish has had a very tangible effect on the city, making for dynamic street scenes filled with human interaction instead of a sea of parking lots and busy roads with little to no human interaction.
Although Chicago overall is better than other cities, the city still does need to take steps to increase equal accessibility to all of its neighborhoods. Each of the top ten walkable neighborhoods were all located in north side communities, and the only south side neighborhood to crack the top 20 was Armour Square. Walkable neighborhoods increase people’s quality of life in many very important ways, so making sure that every community is accessible is a necessity.
We’ve created this infographic to spotlight which of Chicago’s neighborhoods are the most walkable, according to data from Walk Score®, which bases walkability on attributes such as distance to amenities and services.
